While our work is diverse and extensive for this client, the below case study focuses on Groundwork Strategies’ role as a Labor Liaison.

The Challenge:

While working toward state approval of their bid for a large-scale renewable energy project, the client sought to take a proactive approach to Labor engagement. To demonstrate their commitment to Union labor and workforce training in the renewable energy space and make themselves more competitive in the state selection process for their project, the client sought buy-in from multiple Unions. Groundwork’s challenge was to bring together multiple Labor Unions in a short 10-week time frame to sign onto the client’s development project to make the client competitive in the state selection process for their project.

Project Overview: Groundwork Strategies worked as the Labor Liaison to bring together six major Unions together with our client. We also brought a state veteran training and outreach program in to participate during the process to secure a separate stand alone agreement.

Tactics: Groundwork leveraged its long-standing and strong relationships with government and organized Labor to coordinate meetings between our client and relevant Union representatives. We also used these strong ties to help advise our client on best practices during the negotiation process.

We researched already existing agreements and conducted an assessment of best practices for multi-party memorandums of understanding. Having this information in place allowed us to meet an accelerated timeline for signing the agreement. Agreements were equally mindful of both the Labor community and the developer and took into account industry as whole.

The Result: Groundwork Strategies was able to broker a monumental, first-of-its-kind memorandum of understanding (MOU) with six unions operating in the state as part of the client’s bid submission. The MOU highlights how our client and the unions will work together to build new renewable energy infrastructure and was the start of a strong and continuing relationship.

Within months of signing the MOU, the client’s bid was successful and they were awarded a contract to develop one of the nation’s largest clean energy projects.
